don't you just love politics, war, and the media?
First of all, I'm super stoked about my new computer!  It's not quite up and running yet (but it will be tomorrow after my boyfriend brings me a new CPU fan), but the prospect of having a system that can run photoshop and games smoothly is just...plain sexy!!  On my current laptop, if I work at a resolution higher than, say, 1000x1000 pixels, strokes lag a lot.  Sometimes, I'll make a stroke with a big brush, and then sit back and watch it slowly work its way across the page over the course of the next 30 seconds.  Pretty frustrating.  Plus, I'm pretty fond of gaming, and my laptop generally has FPS rates of about 5-10.  I have screenshots of 1 FPS.  It's pretty scary.  Anyways...my boyfriend Mo helped me pay for this new system, and ordered all the parts in for me and put them together, and gave me his "old" 22" monitor (barely a year old, and beautiful!!!).  I splurged and bought a Razer Lycosa keyboard.  I'm going to have to live off rice and beans for the next few months, hahaha!

In other news, I'm rushing to get a paper done for a Classical Studies course on ancient Greece.  Funny thing is, I'm writing about the modern America/Iraq war, the ancient Graeco-Persian war, and the way the media (movies in particular) have distorted and manipulated these conflicts through leftist organizations.  WHOOHOOHOO!!!  HOT TOPIC!!!  Bring on the heat, I'm an unabashed right wing supporter.  Right wing in theory, really, I can't say I support everything the conservative government does (either Canadian or American!  I'm Canadian btw).

My prof is VERY leftist, so...this could be interesting.  He's pretty anti-military, anti-war, etc, whereas I'm...extremely pro-military, to say the least.  Maybe I'm digging my own grave?

Thoughts?  I love talking about this stuff.

Oh, and don't forget about :iconendling:  Go read his journal.  Now.  Please?

Help An Artist
Hey guys.  Just a quick journal entry this time.  I just read (moments ago) about a situation an artist I respect and have been watching for the last couple years (:iconendling:) is going through, and I would like to help out.  You can find more into in his journal:  [link]

In short, he's got some pretty big medical bills, and I'd like to contribute as I can to help him get through this.  I'm super busy with school and life at the moment, but I do have time for speedpaints and sketchs.  Therefore, I'm going to be offering sketch commissions as a fundrasier for Shaun, and all proceeds will go directly to his Paypal account.  If you are interested, please contact me via pm.

These sketches can be either digital or graphite skethes/linearts, or black and white portrait speedpaints, or anything that takes less than 5ish hours.  Prices may vary depending on the time it takes, but will range between $10-15 dollars.  It's not much, but every little bit will help!  Again, send me a pm if you are interested.

So...any takers?  I can't express how strongly I suggest this.  Or, if you don't want a commish, you can always send money directly to Shaun.  For more details and for a list of other artists trying to help, see 's journal.

Some bad and some good
I haven't been very productive lately.  I've been trying to do daily speedpaintings, but school's kept me fairly busy.  On top of that, last week I came down with what I thought was a normal cold, but then I started getting fevers and migraines.  The migraines are common enough, with me, but combined with the fever, I think it may be linked.  Then I developed a bit of an infection (don't worry, I won't go tmi), followed by a couple more days of fever.  I'm not yet sure if the infection triggered the fevers, or if it's related to something else...perhaps my "cold" was some strain of flu?  I'm not sure.  Or maybe, as my mom speculated when I spoke with her on the phone tonight, it's something I picked up this summer when I was in the Near East (I got really sick over there).  I've been refusing to see the doctor, but my boyfriend and a close friend of mine, who is in nursing school, have been harassing me to get to a doc, and my mom's on my case now too.  I hate going to clinics and hospitals with a passion (spent a lot of time there when I was younger).  So maybe I'll book an appointment tomorrow...I need to get some sleeping aids anyway.  Insomnia's led to me missing a lot of my morning classes, and I'm falling behind on some of my classes, starting to get really stressed about it.  Which also doesn't help the migraines

On a brighter note, I was feeling well enough to go to GM Place and watch the Detroit Red Wings at the Canucks!  Even though I live in Vancouver (at the moment), I'm not a Canucks fan, but a hardcore Wings fan.  One of my friends bought me a ticket, which was super awesome of him (thanks Joel!!).  I had a blast, ate too much popcorn, and watched my hockey heroes pwn the Canucks.  My throat is still a little sore from cheering and yelling haha.  I was one of the very few Wings fans in the audience of thousands of Canucks fanatics.  It was interesting.  lol

This weekend was my boyfriend's and mine 3-month anniversary.  I warned him that I was super sick and likely to be miserable all weekend, but he drove up from Washinton to take care of me (and it worked!  I felt much better by Sunday).  He's such a sweetheart...  :heart::heart:
Oh, and THANK YOU Emily for introducing us  =P

So You Think You Can Dance Canada!

The American show So You Think You Can Dance has always been a favourite of mine.  This year, it has premiered in Canada, and one of my good friends, Izaak Smith, auditioned.  He was accepted into the top 200, then made it through to the top 20, and after two weeks of voting he is among the top 16!!!!  It's surreal, seeing one of my friends on national tv, not to mention on one of my favourite shows!

SO!  If you are Canadian, I call upon you to watch SYTYCDC on Wednesday night and VOTE! for Izaak Smith.  You can vote more than once - REDIAL is your friend!!!!  You can catch the show on ctv - here's a link to the show times:  [link]

In other news, after three years on dA I finally reached the 10k pageview milestone!!  Thank-you to all my watchers and to those who visit my page regularly :)

ANNOUNCING:  Commissions!!

Okay, I'm going to have this as the journal that can be referenced about commission info, rather than typing it out in every following journal.

As some of you know, I'm a full-time university student.  I pay for all my schooling myself.  In the past three years, I've managed to get by without taking any loans out, but this year my funds have run out, and I've been forced to take out loans.  It's all worth it, in the long run, but it does make things a bit tight (especially when the govt gives me the very smallest amount they can for me to get by!).  I have a job, but I only get a few shifts a month, so it doesn't make that much of a difference in the long run.

So, I would like to start offering commissions, at what I think is a very decent price, for the number of hours put into them.  (for example, if I charged $80 for the recent piece entitled "Serenity's End", that would give me less than a dollar an hour.  Yikes!)  This extra little money will help me out greatly with groceries, and with going to visit my boyfriend, who lives in the States.

To give you all incentive, the first three people who order commissions will receive a 25% discount off the base prices of their commissions.  :)

Prices:</u>  (All prices in Canadian Dollars)
COLOUR:
Detailed portrait: $80
Semi-detailed portrait: $40
Sketch portrait: $20

SHADES OF GREY:
Detailed portrait:  $45
Sketch portrait:  $15

PENCIL SKETCHES/LINE ART:
Full figure:  $15
Bust:  $10
Additional character:  $10

If you are interested, please send me a pm :)

I will be loading examples of each of these into my gallery soon.  I have a lot of sketch portraits on my computer that I haven't posted on DA, just as black and white portraits etc.

Questions?  Ask away.  Oh, and brownie points are awarded for linking this journal in yours ;)  Spread the love!

Yeah so I don't feel like copy/pasting the old formating into here, so here we go.

Basically this is to get my old angsty journal off my front page.

A new journal with a new layout (actually thinking of trying out CSS...if you have any tips, lemme know!  I've never attempted CSS before.) will be coming soon.

I have tons to write about!

...I'm just too damn lazy.

For example...I was in Israel this summer, started a blog and all, but the blog only lasted about a week before I just stopped bothering to write.  [link]

So!  Pics and stuffs about that coming up.

And that's just one of the things I have to talk about.  Recently I've moved, got a serious bf  (liek zOMG Sen has a steady bf??!!!!), um, started school again (man remind me not to take any more semesters off school, I just about lost my mind), and...yeah.  Lots to talk about.

Stay tuned, kiddies ^^

Yeah, so someone stole my phone  :(  It was the day I left to travel to Wetaskiwin for Winter War.  I was in the mall grabbing a bite to eat before I met up with my ride, and I ran to the restrooms before standing in line at Edo.  While in line, I realized I had forgotten my phone in the restroom, and when I ran back in there (not three minutes after I left it), there was only one other person in there, and she had a couple big bags she was scrounging around in.  I ran in, asked her hurriedly, "Have you seen a cellphone in here?" then checked the stall I had left it in (incidentally, the one right behind her), but it wasn't there.  I was too flustered to notice how evasive she was when saying, "uh...no", and it didn't clue in until after she disappeared that she'd taken it.

Fukkin bitch.

I bought that phone on a three-year contract, and I still have over 2 years left on it....it was a nice phone, a moto razr, and I loved it.  Not only was it completely customized (300 wallpaper and Down With the Sickness ringtone  ^^), it had a TON of photos and videos from special events and occassions.

That are now gone.  I hope that bitch sees the vids and stuff and feels bad.

So, I couldn't afford to buy a new razr, so I had to settle with some shitty $70 crap, that doesn't even have any nice ringtones.  It just looks....so bad quality.  I never realized how much I loved my razr until it was gone  :(

My bloody insurance plan with Future Shop wouldn't cover theft at all, nor would Telus.  -.-

Soooo yeah....life sux

Aside from that - I'm going on a volunteer archaeology dig in Israel in a couple months, and I still haven't saved up nearly enough money :(

So if you know anyone who wants to sponsor a volunteer excavation of a 3rd century church in Israel.....  ;)

Hey guys...

Sorry I haven't updated this journal or my art in so long.  About an month ago I ran out of space on my computer and so loaded all...and I mean ALL of my digital works onto my external HD.  Which then went and died on me.

Soooo....I currently have no way of accessing my digital art to work on.  Assuming it's salvageable.  Which it better be.  Because if it's not i'll have to kill something or jump off a bridge or do something drastic like that....

Anyways, this is just a quick note to say that....and to let you know one other thing.

I just found out today that my grandma has just been diagnosed with bone cancer.  So if you're the praying type, could you please keep her in your prayers?  It would mean a lot to me.  Hopefully, through lots of prayer and medical work my Grandma will be healed.

Thanks,
Kat / Sen

Concerning my absence:

I’ve been away a lot lately, and also had some computer issues.  For two weeks earlier this month, I was away visiting family, and at the end of that vacation my laptop decided to die, and I was without access to any of my artwork for about a week before we got it fixed.  And I tell ya, I was super anxious that whole week that I might lose my harddrive.  Luckily, it was a problem easily solved, and no memory was lost.

My two weeks in Saskatchewan were great.  I had been thinking about not going this year, and going to some local events that were taking place while we would be gone, but I’m glad that I decided on going.  All of our relatives live in Saskatchewan, except for two families that live in Alberta.  We’re the only ones in BC, and we make a yearly trip to see them each year.  During the last week of the trip one of my cousins and I drove down into Montana, to go shopping in Havre.  After shopping, we went cruising through the Little Bear Paw mountains, which was fun.  After three hours of wondering whether we were going to hit a dead end on those gravel roads, we finally came out onto the highway, and made it back across the border before 9pm (when they close the border).  My dad and I went gopher hunting several times, out in the hills by the old farm that my great-great grandpa homesteaded on.  My dad grew up there, and now one of his brothers runs the place.  It’s in the perfect location, right by some beautiful hills and valleys.  I’ve decided that I want to retire there, lol.  There’s this beautiful little abandoned homestead nestled in a valley a mile from that homestead.  When my great-grandmother moved to Canada from Sweden, she came with her best friend Frieda, who lived in that little place.  It’ been abandoned for the past 50 years or so, but I’d love to rebuild there.  When I win the lottery.  Lol.

After interrogating my parents last night I finally figured exactly the recipe of my Heinz 57 mutt breeding.  I am:

¼ Swedish
¼ English
1/8 Scottish
1/8 Russian
1/8 Norwegian
1/8 Irish

So…mix ‘em together and you get me…ish.

And from that selection, it turns out I look just like my Russian grandmother.

Anyhow, I’m nearly done those commissions on my list.  I would have posted them already, but I think they need a little more tweaking.  One of them I’ve re-done 5 times…

I just dyed my hair today.  I was originally going to go for red and black (the colours of the Wolfpack), but ended up going a safer route (as black dye’s almost impossible to get out) and did dark brown with red highlights.  I like the result :)  I’ve dyed my hair various shades lighter than my natural colour before, but I’ve never gone darker, but I think I’m going to stick with going darker from now on.  I’ll post pictures sometime this week (after I take a million and find one that looks halfway decent).

Next weekend is a very special weekend.  IT’S WARTIME BABY!   Whooooooooooooohooooo!  It’s Clinton War weekend, and I’m tweaking my armour up, fixing my medieval dresses, and getting ready for the par-tay.  I’m going to find some face paint to use as war paint, which will go nicely with the leather pauldrons I have and the rest of my fur-covered armour.  A fur-clad barbarian valkyrie, am I!!

Suddenly, that Galadriel line from FotR comes to mind (I’m quoting this from memory, forgive any mistakes)

“In place of a dark lord you shall have a queen!!  Not dark but beautiful and terrible as the gods!  Treacherous as the seas!  Stronger than the foundations of the earth!  All shall love me and despaaaaiiiiir.”

Lol

Well, one of my life-time goals is to become a good enough fighter to win a principality tourney and become a princess by my own right.  Laugh if you will, but I can have my dreams, eh?  And after I achieve that, who knows?  I like to reach high.  Wow, I’m really having a night of thinking up corny movie lines, because one line just popped into my head, from A Knight’s Tale (love that movie, btw!), about changing the stars (or one’s stars, I can’t remember exactly how they put it).

Anyways, back to the main reason behind this journal (if you’re still reading, that is):  I apologize for my long absence from DA.  Commissions in progress as well as the kiriban prizes will be posted asap, probably this week.  I’ll be super busy finishing up my armour and garb, but I’ll find time (somehow) to fit in the retouching of the pics.

If you’ve managed to follow me thus far, I applaud thee!

Till later!
.Sen.

EDIT:  My dear friend :iconmorgan-of-salerone: is graduating today!!!  So go give her a hug! (or you will be cursed and your reproductive organs will fall off)

/edit.

So yeah, I haven't gotten much of anything done lately.  I work on photoshop and illustrator all day at work and when I go home I don't always feel in the mood to work with them more.  Also, my arthritis in my hands has been acting up (I think this rainy weather has something to do with it), and they're really stiff.  It's like, when I go to snatch a mosquito out of the air, it's like I'm watching my hand in slow motion...only it's going as fast as it can!  ><

My parents blame my gibbled hands on my violent tendancies/past-times.  I have to admit, those years of boxing probably didn't help.  Now with heavy fighting I'm getting displaced bones that heal out of place, torn up hands, armour bites, and bruises to rival the mother of all bruises.  I mean, when the entire top half of my left leg is a mass of black, blue, purple, and shades of green you know there's some damage going on...

I went camping last weekend at an SCA event called Coronet, where the Coronet tourney determines the next Tanist and Tanista (people who will be invested as prince/princess at the next Investiture event).  That was a blast!  I never have so much fun as I do when I'm hanging out with those people.  I may post pictures of the event some time.

Which leads me to think of Clinton War....I shiver with anticipation...I can't bloody WAIT until Clinton!   Counting down the days has already begun.

Anyways, I promise to finish my commissions and post some artwork soon.  Even if my eyes fall out of my head and I turn into a zombie-vampire monster thing from working inside with no windows all day long...

Well, final exams are finally almost over...but this also means that I'll be moving back to the middle of nowhere without any fast internet :(  I'll miss my internet  *pets*.

This year went by so fast, it seems.  I"m trying to get this job that'll give me a lot of experience in my field of study, so I'm crossing my fingers that the reply by the end of the month will be a good one.

Oh, and it's PLAYOFF TIME!!!!!   WhoooooOOOOO!    The Wings are up against the Flames again, but this year the flames SHALL BE DOUSED!!!!   Bwahahahahahaha.  One on one, they stand no chance.  For example, Iginla's great, but he ain't got nothin' on Lidstrom.  And I love Kipper, but I'm sorry, Hasek's just going to show that youngun' how to play.

LET'S GO RED WINGS!!!!!  *boom boom boomboomboom*

Commish Prices!!!
All in Canadian dollars. If you have a question about other currencies, let me know and I'll convert it. I'm a softie - the prices are negotiable under valid circumstances. ;)

Sketch colour portrait (several examples in gallery): $15
Full colour portrait (none in gallery, though an example is coming soon; it is a much more polished and detailed version of the sketch portrait, much more life-like): $40
Character pencil sketch (example [link]): $5
Inked character: (picture these, but finished XD [link]) $10

Special requests, such as a character sheet, or a bust-up painting, or whatever, are also accepted. Pm me if interested.

Sketch commission for - 60%
Full portrait commission for - 10%
Reworking Daenerys w/ bg and dragons
Face tutorial w/ WoT chara (but who it is is a surprise ;))

I'm almost done final exams, so progress on these will continue shortly!!!!! I haven't forgotten about you!

So the internet in my dorms just up and decided to quit last night.  Which is highly frustrating.  So now I'm down inthe library leeching the wireless.

Anyways, I'm going to make this short, as I'm feeling rather nautious at the moment (I swear I'm allergic to people - I felt fine before I came down here >( ).  I'm pretty much just updating my commission line.

Okay so it's late at night and I'm taking a break from some bloody essay I have to finish for the morning....ick.

I have such a short attention span for some things.  (namely anything not related to art, fantasy, or fighting)

Anyways on that note I'd like to announce that the previous sketch commission sale (see previous journal entries) is over, and I am now accepting regular commissions, which will be started as soon as I finish off the last few sketch commishes that I'm working on.

I got an xray today.  A month and a half ago I messed up my left hand in a swordfight (err...more like a brawl), and after the urging of many people I finally went and got it checked out the other day.  Guess what?  It's broken!  Well, the middle knuckle, anyways, it fractured quite nicely, and the doctor said that depending on how bad it is I might need surgery.  I was wondering what all those new bumps were!  BONE FRAGMENTS ftw lol XD  (gosh I'm tired...I shouldn't write journals when I'm tired...)  Anyways the knuckle is pushed down fairly far...when I hold my hand out with fingers stretched, the knuckle bump is about lined up with the vertex (is that the word I'm looking for?) between my thumb and forefinger.  And it's big and ugleh ;)  And purple.  Which is amusing...my hand bruises up (I just kept on swordfighting and kickboxing since the injury, so it gets all freshly bruised and swollen each time - especially after kickboxing) and the only finger that turns purple now is the middle one.  Which makes for quite the amusing picture.

So anyways, I went and got  my hand xrayed today, but they wouldn't let me see the results :(  So I pretty much just have to wait until next week to hear the final verdict on whether or not I need surgery.  Needless to say, my mom convinced me to stop fighting for a few weeks to let it heal.  Which is all good, because my right wrist is messed up too, something to do with the tendons, and it's been bothering me for a few months.

Okay...I'm going to get back to my essay now.  It's due in...a few hours, and I still want some sleep after I finish the last four pages of this bloody thing.

VARGHALA!!!!

hehe

So I just got back from Winter War in Borealis, which was an absolute BLAST!!!  I tell ya, there's nothing more satisfying than war.  NOTHING I SAY!  I mean the ride back home sucked - it's supposed to be a 9 hour drive, but turned out being...a lot more.  The roads were crap, and we were going like 30 km/hour a lot of the way.  It was a pure skating rink, and we passed a ton of accidents and chained semis that couldn't keep going.

No shit, there I was, storming across the field with my shield wall beside me.  I get one kill, and then, out of the blue, something slams into my throat.  As I fall, I'm looking around and thinking, "What the hell, there's no one there...wait...shiiiit I hate archers!"  The last battle scenario was the best, tons of other, much better 'no shit there I was' stories, but alas, you'll have to ask me if you want to hear those.

And the revelry, the revelry....nothing like a bunch of drunk fighters, knights included, just doing what they do best.

So yeah...I guess I'm still in a bit of a post-event stupo--i mean, adrenaline rush.

Okay, so I found this list entitled "You know you're in the SCA when...", and I have to share some of my favourites (they're all quite true!  which is the great part):

You know you're in the SCA when...
-you've brushed your teeth with beer, because it was easier to find than clean water
-you yell "Huzzah" at mundane events instead of cheering "normally"
-the axe you use to chop wood is one you've made yourself
-you slip and address a coworker as "milord" or "milady"
-people don't assume you're going in for surgery when you say "this weekend I'm going to get my knees fixed"
-you have to remind yourself not to call that tourist in the checkered golf pants "Sir" just because he's wearing a white belt
-you cry "Lay On!" when serving at raquetball (or tennis, or...)
-you have a credit card in the name of your persona

and

You Might be a Stickjock If...
-you can describe the tactics, strategy, weapons, armor and troops used in hundreds of medieval battles, but don't know why they were fought
-you pick up the trash bin lid and automatically snap it up to a defensive position
-you consider a blue card and an authorization two pieces of documentation
-[you're female and] "You're so aggressive!" is a compliment!  (or in my case, it's "Gently!  Hah!  Saeth's not gentle!" and it's definately a compliment XD)

there were tons of others, and those are just some of my favourites.

And for those of you who've commissioned me for sketch portraits, they are in the makings, but since I've been busy with exams and war (and failing exams because of war...), I haven't gotten as many done as I'd hoped.  On my off hours I'm working on them!

Ok, so this is slightly strange...dArt ate half of my last journal.  I just noticed it today, it was cut off halfway through a sentence, and the bit about my being tagged was gone and my commish lineup.  Look for yourself, it's my last journal entry.  I haven't touched it.  Do we have a deviant ghost on the loose?

...not that I really care, it's just...odd.

That's all.
